They asked me to be....

... a GUEST DESIGNER!! I am so excited, and have been wanting to spread the word since I found out a few weeks ago, LOL! Sweet Pea Scraps asked me to be their March guest designer! So here's the kit (more pictures of it up on the blog)...

... and here's some of what I did with it (journaling under each layout):

All of my life I have made up songs. I've done it since I was a little girl. They're usually silly, nonsensical songs, too. What I never would have guessed is that these songs would have such a calming effect on my baby girl. When Eliana is crying inconsolably, I start to sing. Anything. And when she hears my voice, she starts to calm. The longer I sing, the calmer she gets, until she finally falls asleep. All I have to do is sing.

The first time they saw you.

Robert and I are almost 4 years apart in age. Growing up, that was a pretty significant gap. Now that we are both adults, though, we get along great and love to spend time together whenever we can. It's not often enough.

At 28 years old I feel like I am on top of the world. I have been happily married for 7 years. I have a wonderful husband and a beautiful daughter and I am happy. We live in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains and have a beautiful house with a big back yard. We have been blessed with so many things and sometimes I just have to stand back and take it all in. Life has valleys and hills, and right now I am on top of the world!

Some days Ellie needs cookies. And on those days she lets me know by pulling the giant Costco-sized container of animal crackers off the pantry shelf and carrying it into whichever room I happen to be in. Then she sits down near me, making sure that I can see her, and unscrews the lid, then reaches in and takes a cookie. She shoves it inter her mouth and makes and exaggerated "MMMMMM!" sound. Usually she puts the lid on the cookie container until she wants another, then opens it up and the process starts over. It is pretty funny to watch. First because the container is half the size that she is, yet she can carry it all over the house. Second because she knows how to get them for herself, yet feels that she MUST eat them in my presence. And third because she has yet to make a mess in this whole cookie process. That is pretty much the only reason she gets away with it. That and because she is so cute when she does it.

You would never guess by looking at this picture that it was 50 degrees out. But it was. It was teh perfect day to build your first snowman, so we did. Well, Daddy did. I took pictures. You just sat around, pointed, and told Daddy where to put the snowballs. You liked sitting in the snow, but not standing in it, and certainly not walking in it. In fact, if you wad to walk in the snow, you would just stand still and say, "Stuck! Stuck!" until I came to get you. And then you would give me this look. It was not cold, and you were not stuck, but there was nothing we could do to convince you otherwise.

This cracks me up! Every time she rides her horse she says, "Doodleloo doodleloo doodleloo". It's hilarious and took me a while to figure out that she was trying to sing the finale to the William Tell Overture since that's what I hummed the first time I showed her how to ride a stick horse!

This is the first time I ever held you.

I'm pretty unhappy about how badly the photos turned out - there is so much texture and sparkle to these photos that just doesn't come through the camera lens. But I had SO MUCH fun with this kit! And I actually scrapped some of Ellie's hospital pictures... something I hadn't been able to do yet! And I'm happy with how the layouts turned out. No, I LOVE how the layouts turned out. Mine, and everyone else's I've seen done with this kit. Well, okay, that is only one other person, but check out Jana's layouts and tell me they don't blow you away! They're awesome, and if I had a second kit I would scraplift every single one of them. I did find it amusing, though, that Jana thought it was a very soft kit, while I thought it was one of the brighter ones. How she got so many soft and subtle layouts from the same papers I got funky layouts from I'll never know! Oh yeah... another note... I got to use my Copic markers from the kit club on the Doodleloo layout! Woohoo! With all the things I needed to accomplish by the end of the month I haven't played much with the markers yet, but I'm in the process of cleaning my scraproom right now (says the lady who is still typing away on her blog...) and once it is clean I'll be playing with Copics! Anyone know where to get a cheap blender pen?

SPS Sketch Challenge Layout

Jana Eubank posted a sketch for this week's challenge on the Sweet Pea Scraps blog. I'm still avoiding my craft room until it gets cleaned (HA!) so here's a digital layout for the challenge! This is my favorite digital layout so far. I think I'm getting better, and I'm definitely getting faster. I think the new version of GIMP is helping (I have access to all my fonts now!!) and I'm enjoying it more.

So... what do you think? Am I getting better?

WILD CARD CHALLENGE!

Okay... this week's Wild Card Challenge is to....

Make a hybrid card!

You can use any digital and physical elements to do this, but you have to use at least one digital and one physical! Print out digital paper onto an overlay and use it, print out a poem or sentiment, alter a photo and use that... whatever strikes your fancy! But your challenge is to go hybrid...

First Digital Card

I think I'm better at digital cards than layouts. Here's the one I did for the MIM Card Challenge to use 3 patterned papers. The stripe is one, the orange is another, and the flowers and blue swirls were cut from a third. Everything here is an internet freebie. My plan is to print it out on cardstock (or a transparency... oooh!) and layer it on a card, and add little rhinestones to the flower centers. And maybe follow the blue swirls with Stickles. We'll see how it turns out.

Stay tuned for this week's Wild Card Challenge!

Scrapping in GIMP

So we did a little more research last night and found a ginormous shortcoming to scrapbooking in GIMP. There is no wrap around text, which makes journaling difficult. It's not impossible, it's just more difficult. So now I wonder if I can create text in something like paint or another image editor and just import it to GIMP. We'll see. In the meantime, I found this cool website that's all about digital scrapbooking in GIMP. Sweet!

The learning curve...

There's definitely a learning curve when it comes to digital scrapbooking. I'm sure there is with most things. I wonder if it would be easier with Photoshop, but I don't want to buy a copy since I have GIMP. And I wonder if I should just get a cheapie scrapbooking program. Will it still take as long? It takes forever. And I don't necessarily like the outcome. I wish there was an easy way to do journaling in GIMP. But I went on a giant digital freebie binge and found COOL freebies that don't look so wooden, so when I have a moment I'll sit down with some of them and give it another go. I still don't think I'll ever forsake the world of paper and glue. I love it too much. But I AM learning new things about GIMP, and how to make it do what I want it to. So that's good. But I still have a LOT of learning left to do, so I'll keep plugging away at it...

So Behind....

I feel like I am so behind. I have deadlines creeping up on me and I'm starting to be overwhelmed! To top it off, Ellie is little miss cranky pants this morning, which probably means I won't get much done. I'm debating whether or not to go to the Children's Museum today. She's just so grumpy. But we need to go to Costco because we're out of milk, so I really do need to go into town and maybe playing with her friends will do her some good. But I want no more of the tantrums, and no more crying. She had a bad dream last night and woke up screaming and crying, so it took her a while to get calmed down and I'm sure she's tired this morning. Poor baby. Poor Mommy.

So today I really need to get cards for a swap done. They need to be to the swap master by the 29th... That's coming up quickly! I also need to finish some time sensitive scrapbooking by the end of the month, too. I need to finish up the baby album for Taylor, since her babies will be here at the end of March. Just need to print out calendar pages and add page protectors to the album for that. I need to get working on making Protocol arrangements for the first week of May. Reservations to be made and classes to be planned. And my craft room is a mess, to the point that I start hyperventilating when I think about trying to clean it. Seriously. My pulse rate just shot up when I typed it because I thought about it! I HAVE to deal with it sooner or later. But it scares me. Maybe a giant trash bag will help.... *shudder* Okay... moving on... Must... get... moving...

I should eat some breakfast and hit the ground running today. That's the only way I'll get everything accomplished...

ETA: We went to the museum and Ellie has been sleeping all afternoon. That gave me time to finish my cards for the swap! Woohoo! One thing down.

Oh. And add to my list... write up instructions for card kit and make mini book kit for March. Eek! One step forward, two steps back... *sigh*

ooops!

Tonight must be a night of mistakes. Well, just the last hour or so, I guess. First, all the colors in my last post are messed up, so you can only read it all if you highlight it. I tried changing it, but no luck. *sigh*

Second, I just uploaded a series of pictures to 2ps. They're of the class I taught tonight, only somehow I managed to stick a totally random (and not too flattering) photo of myself in the bunch, and I can't seem to get THAT changed, either! But you have to check it out, because I think it's hilarious. Stupid mistake. Stupid, unfixable mistake. *sigh*

I think the internet is ganging up on me.

MIM Card Challenge!!

It's week 3 card time again! I'm a day late, but here's your challenge...

Make a card using at least 3 different patterned papers!

This is going to be a toughie for me, since I don't usually mix so many papers on a single card! So I'll be back with my creation a little later. In the meantime... have fun playing with papers!

Thursday, February 14, 2008

Happy Valentine's Day!!

Here's a little card I made a while back and I thought today was a fitting day to share it! I've been trying to use up my rub-on stash, since they tend to go "bad" after too long on the shelf! So here's a little ditty using some Hambly paper, Hambly rub-ons (because the paper is shimmery it's hard to see the detail in the upper corner, but the silver flourishes go all the way around and there's a rub on in the upper corner, too!), Heidi Swapp ghost hearts, and flowers and glittery letters from the Target $pot. It's one of those cards that looks 100% better in person, but is hard to photograph. So just use your imagination and know that it really IS a super shimmery, sparkly card! Now... if only I knew someone who was getting married! This would be perfect for a wedding...

My Sunshine

Here's another hybrid layout about my sweet Ellie-pie! I love this picture of her. For some reason the look in her eyes gets me every time. *sigh* Must be a mom thing.

For this one I added the frame and empty journaling block (both freebie downloads) to the photo before printing. Then I went back and added the journaling in my own handwriting. The journaling is just the words to the song You Are My Sunshine. I love that it worked out just perfectly for the words I LOVE YOU to go in the big box!

The papers came from my Sweet Pea Scraps December kit (can you tell I'm a couple months behind in my playing??). The patterned paper, stamps, and jewels are Iron Orchid Designs. And this layout is for challenges on both the SPS and IOD blogs, too!

The butterflies and flowers were stamped on the patterned paper, then cut out and adhered to the layout. The jewels were cut apart, too, and the circles were stretched out to make swirls around the butterflies. There's a lot of stamping on this page, and I have to say that I am LOVING my new Build-A-Frame stamp set. I got it because I liked the corners and the butterfly, but I like how seamlessly you can make a whole frame, too! Love it...

All That Glitter is Gold...

... And that's our theme for this week's challenge! GLITTER! I want to see the layouts you make with that shimmery, sparkly stuff! Be creative... stretch yourself... but use glitter!

Here's a layout to get you started - one I made for a couple other challenges as well! I used a sketch from the Iron Orchid Designs blog (as well as a ton of their product - papers, stamps, tape, jewels) and my December kit from Sweet Pea Scraps. The SPS challenge for last week was to make a layout using the word "love" and this layout is all about Ellie's love for her kitty boots! This is also my first hybrid layout... can you see the frames around the photos? I'll play a little more with photo editing, but I'm having fun so far! Oh - and as for the glitter on this layout... all of the flowers are glittered rub ons! I used my uber-cool Martha glitter, though you can't see how sparkly it is in this picture.

Okay... now go spread a little sparkle in the world!

Christmas...

Here's something I did over Christmas. I had some time to kill and my computer, so I played with some of the freebie digital kits I've downloaded. I can't say it's my favorite layout ever, but I did learn a few things about digital scrapping with Gimp. I don't think I'll ever fully convert to digiscrapping. I like the texture of "real" scrapbooking too much! But I can see the benefit to some of the digital elements, so we'll see how I do with hybrid scrapping. I've got my digitally altered photos sent off to Costco, so I can pick them up tomorrow and finish my layout. I hope it turns out cool. We'll see.

Coordinating papers and rub ons

I have to admit... I don't usually use products that coordinate. I sort of do my own thing with what I have on hand, but there's a lot of mixing and matching. Even with my Sweet Pea Scraps kits. I pull one paper from this line, another paper from that line... Of course they go together because Julie and Kristin do such a great job putting the kits together, but I just don't fee like I need to be limited by the "name" of the company, line, whatever. You know? And I store my paper (yes, all of it, except for my SPS kits, which I keep together in their little baggies since it's easier) by color, not manufacturer. I mix my Hambly with my DCWV and my Creative Imaginations and my cardstock. Maybe it's not the easiest way to do it, but it works for me and then I can see different combinations that I maybe wouldn't have before. BUT the Cherry Arte that came in the SPS kit a few months ago was different. There were coordinating papers and rub ons and... I used them together! And I love how they came out. When I first saw the diamond rub ons I thought, "Hmmm... don't have a clue what to do with those..." but they're SO FUN! Here's what I ended up doing with the Cherry Arte papers and rub ons...

I did it a while ago, and I don't know why I didn't post it way back then, but I didn't so I'm sharing it now!! It at least gives you something to look at while you wait for me to post something new!

(And speaking of new... I am actually working on a layout right now for a challenge on another blog - I'm loving it and I can't wait to finish it so I can show you. And I'm stretching myself... It's a HYBRID layout! and no, I don't mean a layout about my Prius, though I do need to do one of those one of these days...)

Have you heard of them?

Today I came across a blog I've never seen before. It's Craft Critique. Have you heard of them? I hadn't. But I looked at their blog and it's different from most of the ones I read... it's like a giant scrapbooking product review site! I'm adding it to my reader and looking forward to seeing what they have to say about the new products revealed at CHA this week.

Sewing...

It doesn't seem like I've been getting very much papercrafting in lately, except for the layout I posted yesterday. The card and mini album I posted I'd done earlier (because I've had this sketch in my head, just waiting for the first Tuesday of February!) and with all the other stuff I've been doing lately I just haven't been making cards or scrapbook pages. That goes for today, too.

The downside to the recent cake fiasco* is that I didn't get all of Taylor's gift done for the shower. So I gave her half the gift, but finished making the rest of it this afternoon. Which means.... I actually used my sewing machine to SEW, not scrapbook! Woohoo! That's pretty rare in my house.

I spent the afternoon making 3 hooded towels. The first was a brown one for Ellie and test run to make sure I knew what I was doing (since I don't believe in patterns, measuring, or even using pins if I can help it...) before I started in on the baby gifts. I made the hood a little too big, so Ellie can use it to dress up like the Grim Reaper if she wants to someday, but it will work for now and I was able to adjust my design for the "real" projects of the afternoon.

The second and third towels are pink, with white lace around the hood. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. They have large hoods, too. I'm pretty sure that will overwhelm the newborn babies' heads, but it will be nice when they are toddlers. The hooded towels we got when Ellie was born (the big, handmade ones, that is - not the teeny tiny store bought kind) are getting too small for us to dry her head with while she's wrapped up in them. So I made these big enough that the Taylor** twins will be able to use them for a good long time. =D

*by the way, the "reject" cake tasted really good, and I was even told it didn't look bad. I'm still glad I went with the backup cake, but I had to laugh when Leif took it to work and his coworkers said, "Wow! This is the reject cake? I wanna see the REAL cake!" Little do they know that the "real" cake came from Costco!

** for the record, that is not a typo, and neither is the reference to Taylor's shower. The mom's first name is Taylor, and she is married to a man whose last name is Taylor, thus the babies' last name is Taylor, aka the Taylor twins. Her name is not, however, Taylor Taylor, but would be if she had taken his last name.

Another Variations #2 Project

My 3rd project for this week's Variations on a Sketch. I used my Sweet Pea Scraps December kit for this layout about Ellie at 5 months. I had a lot of fun playing with some techniques I hadn't tried before, as well as a couple new ink pads, and even a stamp I've had for a while and never used! I'm pretty happy with how it turned out and have to say this is one of my favorite sketches so far!

Variations on a Sketch #2

It's the first week of February, so here's your sketch for this month!

My challenge for you is to use this sketch as part of a card, layout, album, project.... you name it! Be creative and see if you can come up with at least two different variations on this sketch! Here are two of mine...

I'll tell you more about that last one a little later. It deserves a post of its own. It's a mini album that folds down to one circle (that hooks onto the clear background as the flower center) but when it is opened it opens like this. =D I (obviously) haven't finished it, but this is the general idea and how it follows the sketch, at least.

Okay... get creating all you crafties!

Fun Stuff!!

I got my new Sweet Pea Scraps kit today and I'm so excited to play with it! I love all the papers and embellishments - beautiful creams and reds and blacks, and some light blue thrown in, too! My favorite, though? GRUNGEBOARD!! I've seen this stuff online everywhere, but this is the first I've actually handled it. OH WOW. It feels like suede! And it's flexible! Here I thought it was just bumpy chipboard, but it is so NOT!

And let me just say how much I love that Kristin and Julie take care of me! =D Kristin said she made sure I got grungeboard with hearts and wings instead of skulls and crossbones since she knows I have a little girl. How sweet is that!! THANKS KRISTIN! I would have been happy with whatever since I just love their kits no matter what, but it is great to know how well they treat their customers!

My other fun thing from today is that I got my Cornish Heritage Farms "Beautiful" set in the mail! This is the one I won not too long ago from CPS. Yippeee! And it is just that.... BEAUTIFUL! I am going to have so much fun with this set. And get this... they are based in Chinook, MT! I didn't know they were a MT company!! That's awesome! Also, their unmounted stamps come backed with smart cushion. This smart cushion stuff is the coolest ever! It's not sticky to the touch, but it clings perfectly to an acrylic block. So all I had to do was trim the images and they're ready to use! I don't have to wait until I can tack them! WOOOHOO!

I probably won't have time to play today, as I need to clean up the last few handwash-only dishes from the shower, clean up from the Super Bowl party, and set up for the Mary Kay party I'm having here tonight. It's been party central here lately! But once I've got all that done, I will definitely be playing! (Though, I admit, my craft room is a complete mess and I should probably clean that up again before I do more playing - but I probably won't. I'll probably just play anyway.)

Well, I'm off to get dishes washed and laundry folded, but I'll be back tomorrow with a new challenge and the winner of the 5th week challenge!

Bloggy Giveaway Winner!

The Bloggy Carnival Giveaway Winner is ...

Here's what she had to say...

Blogger Sandra said...

Your blog is great! Your art is amazing. I'm so glad I found "My inner Martha!"

Congratulations!! Email me your address and I'll get your goodies in the mail to you!! Thanks to everyone for playing!

The Shower...

... is over and I'm calling it a success! People had fun (even though I made them scrapbook!), Taylor got some nice gifts, and everybody complimented me on the cheesecake and punch. =D So without further ado, here are some pictures of the shower decorations:

Flower arrangement

I love getting flowers from Costco. They always have the best, and you can't beat 2 dozen longstem roses for $14! When I brought them home, I looked at my compote and got a brilliant idea... with a little florist's foam, I could probably do a lovely arrangement in the compote! I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, and I had enough roses left over for 5 smaller arrangements in custard cups and small vases to place around the house, too! I was a little nervous about doing the flower arrangement after the cake fiasco, but I think it turned out beautifully! This arrangement restored my hope for a wonderful shower!

Cheesecake

Here's the backup cheesecake, plus my own frosting decorations. I'm pretty happy with it, especially since my other cake decided to be so ill-behaved!! And it turns out that most of the shower attendees didn't even know you could buy fresh cheesecakes at Costco, so I could have even gotten away with claiming it was my own!! Of course, when they asked if I made it I did 'fess up and tell them the truth about its origin...

Set Up

It's hard to see from the picture, but this was the set up I used for the shower. I wish I'd thought to move the chairs and take a better picture, but this is the one I have, so this is the one I'm sharing! The table was decorated with an album (which we filled with scrapbook pages instead of playing cheesy shower games) and two rose vases. The counters were covered with table cloths (I'll do that again, too! I thought it made the presentation much better and it looked less like my kitchen and more like two buffet lines...) and serving dishes, and flowers. I used "the pink stuff" (as it is called around here), otherwise known as rose-colored depression glass. I thought it would make for a perfect baby girl shower. =D And since I don't actually own a punch bowl or glasses, but have 13 depression ware stemware glasses that are the perfect size for punch, it worked out well. From the pink stuff I also used a cake plate, pitcher, serving round for veggies, little dish for dip, and serving plate for mini quiche. I used a big frosted glass bowl for the punch with a silver ladle and it worked nicely for a punch bowl! I'll have to remember that for the future. Oh, and I served vanilla punch, which is always a hit. We had it at our wedding. It's super easy and elegant as can be. Here's the recipe if you're interested:
  • 4 liters Sprite
  • 1 C vanilla syrup (like you put in coffee)
That's it! Like I said... super easy and if you use the yellowish syrup (instead of the clear - it all depends on the brand you buy, but they all taste the same and just differ in color) it has a sort of champagne look to it, which is really elegant. This recipe serves about 24 punch sized glasses, and halves (or doubles) well.

Oh yes, and I forgot to mention that this is a secret family recipe. I think this is its internet debut, and all the credit goes to my mom. She made it up for my wedding! =D

Rule # 265

Rule #265 of party planning is:

Always buy a back-up cake.

It's a good rule, too. I didn't give up on my cake. I tried. And I tried. And I tried. I made a batch of the tried-and-true Cricso/powdered sugar/milk buttercream frosting, filled a disposable piping bag (because I did NOT want to try to clean a real piping bag after all the trouble this little cake had caused me already) and started frosting the cake with a wide, flat tip. It was all good, until the pressure built up in my little piping bag so much that the side burst and the frosting squirted out the side. Wow. Never had that happen before... But I managed to makeshift my way to finishing the frosting application only to realize that the cake really didn't look very good. And my buttercream somehow went on a different texture than it started out, so I couldn't even use a knife or spatula to smooth it out and move it around. It was weird. I decided a diversion was the answer and got ready (with a new piping bag) to pipe frosting swirls along the sides of the cake so people wouldn't notice that it wasn't perfect. And wouldn't you know, the side of THAT piping bag burst as well! No more buttercream for those bags!

So that's when I decided that this was not the cake for my shower. And I was glad I bought the backup cheesecake.

I still haven't given up on my little cake, though, and I will be serving it at my Mary Kay party on Monday night. I can slice it up and serve it on plates and it will taste delicious. And no one will ever know what it looked like before I sliced it.

I'll post a picture of the finished cheesecake after I put the royal frosting decorations on it. Really, I'm sure I'll post pictures of the whole shower soon.

Friday, February 01, 2008

I'm not giving up!

But I am going to Costco to buy a fancy cheesecake in case my cake doesn't turn out. Things keep going wrong and I'm on take 3 for the frosting. What happened to take 2, you ask? Well, I asked Leif to get butter from the freezer and he did. I didn't, however, specify UNsalted butter, and I didn't check when he brought it to me. Yes, I have salty frosting.

... and an 18 month old who is wielding a broomstick dangerously close to my cake! Gotta run!
